“For decades, the European Union has tried to monopolize common food names like ‘parmesan,’ ‘bologna,’ ‘chateau,’ turning generic terms into exclusive EU property and locking American producers out of markets they helped build. As the Administration has illustrated in multiple Agreement on Reciprocal Trade texts by now, the United States has had enough.

We thank Chairman Boozman and members of the Senate Agriculture Committee for furthering that work by advancing a Farm Bill today that draws a line in the sand for U.S. farmers, ranchers and food manufacturers everywhere. CCFN applauds Congress for including the SAFETY Act in the legislation passed today that builds on the Administration’s great work by establishing a U.S. policy directive to proactively negotiate protections for our common name producers. Majority Leader Thune and Senators Baldwin, Marshall and Smith saw this fight coming and got ahead of it, and their leadership deserves real credit. Now it’s the full Senate’s turn to finish the job.”
